Accredited Drug Testing provides full-spectrum hair follicle drug assessments in Grand Pass, Missouri. Whenever you require a hair-based drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair assessments, backed by testing facilities in every city Nationwide equipped to carry out a hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug examinations have become more commonly used for substance testing. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug evaluations over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers enforcing strict drug-free policies, legal systems, and individuals on probation. The major advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its ability to detect drug use for an extended period, usually up to 90 days, involving a monitored collection process and being nearly impossible to manipulate. Nonetheless, when checking for drug usage within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a long-term record by incorporating biomarkers into the fibers of the growing hair. When collected near the scalp, it can reflect up to a 3-month history for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, not simple to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, equivalent to about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil), yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG enhancements and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry if not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening checks the sample quickly for drugs of abuse. Although cost-effective, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in court. Samples presumed positive during Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

During Extraction, if a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, more hair is taken from the original sample for preparation. Drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging process.

Confirmation of any positive screen involves GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Able to identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, thus enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a timeline of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to indicate recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other methods.
  • Variable results: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can affect drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the process examines the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Grand Pass, MO

In comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests, the former offers numerous advantages. Hair testing is superior in tracking drug usage over a prolonged period, offering a more comprehensive view of an individual’s drug history. While urine tests are only viable for recent drug use, hair tests provide a broader and more reliable detection range, ensuring a higher level of accuracy and efficacy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
