Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Green Castle, Missouri. If a hair or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area with testing locations across the country. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are required. Hair tests are suitable for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair test options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction over traditional methods. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts opt for hair tests over standard urine samples. This method is favored by organizations with strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and probation officers. Hair tests have a longer detection span, up to 90 days, and are observed when collected, making them hard to compromise. Yet, for drug use within the prior 5 days, urine tests remain precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers in the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When collected near the scalp, this method can detect alcohol and other drugs within roughly a 3-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is advisable. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. The term "head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is processed into the laboratory’s system. This step checks that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient way to exclude drug usage in most cases, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation for any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if needed. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection duration.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It's exceptionally difficult to alter hair drug test results, ensuring more accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: This test can demonstrate a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other drug testing options.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests," these tests actually analyze the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
