In Halfway, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we've established testing facilities across all Nationwide cities. Most cases require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer further tailored testing alternatives.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence among methods for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair tests over conventional urine tests. These tests are used by companies with strict drug policies and individuals on probation. Hair tests offer the advantage of a longer detection window, up to 90 days, through an observed process, making them nearly foolproof. For recent use in the last 5 days, however, urine tests are still seen as more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When procured near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to obtain, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, an optimal sample for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It's best to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial intake of a sample into a lab's system. This step confirms the sample's secure sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data not included by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary quick examination for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to identify drug usage in most samples, a confirmed screen is essential for court admissibility. Samples indicating presumptive positivity during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screen is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positivity undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to deceive: Tampering with a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Historical usage data: It offers a usage pattern over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual growth differences can affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand itself, not the follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
