At Accredited Drug Testing, comprehensive hair follicle drug testing is available in Hamilton, Missouri. When you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we excel in hair testing, with centers across the country capable of performing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or elsewhere on the body is needed. These tests can examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common choice in drug testing. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse authorities often request these over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals utilize hair follicle tests. Their main advantage: a longer drug detection span of up to 90 days, observed collections, and high resistance to tampering. Yet, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, creating a long-term record of substance use. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to roughly three months. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent portion of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step involves checking that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial quick assessment for controlled substances. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to eliminating drug usage on most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that are tentatively positive during Screening demand a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and made ready for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than through other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation based on necessity. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Tough to manipulate: It is exceedingly difficult to fake a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Traces historical usage: It can trace a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle residing under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
