Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Harrisburg, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing is your expert solution. Whether you require hair drug or alcohol screening, our nationwide centers, including all cities, provide specialized hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are needed. Available tests include drugs, alcohol/ETG, and custom hair analysis options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method in recent years. Many organizations and legal entities choose it over traditional urine tests. It's ideal for employers enforcing strict drug policies, courts, and probation cases. Benefits include an extended 90-day detection window and a supervised collection process that hinders cheating. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. The long-term record of alcohol and drugs is preserved within the growing hair strand's fibers by trapping biomarkers. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection span of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipment is convenient.

A sample of approximately 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp offers a 100mg hair amount, which is ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels over 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. It’s suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn't accessible, the same amount of body hair can be utilized. By head hair, we mean scalp hair. Body hair references include all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal phases in processing a drug test in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the primary insertion of a specimen into a lab’s database. This step checks that the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any missing data not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening conducts an initial brief evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although it’s a budget-friendly method for eliminating drug use in most specimens, a positive screen must be confirmed for court acceptance. Any specimen suspected to be positive during Screening requires further confirmation.

If a specimen appears positive during the Screening phase, more hair is selected from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair in significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Any confirmed positive screening result undergoes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All alleged positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is subjected to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Challenges in falsifying: A hair drug evaluation is hard to manipulate, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Historically informative: It offers a pattern of drug usage over some time instead of just indicating recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expenditure: Hair drug evaluations are often pricier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Attributes like hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", analysis is performed on the hair strand, not on the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
