Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Hayward, Missouri. If a hair-based drug or alcohol test is what you require, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available in cities across the nation capable of performing these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or elsewhere is needed. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other purposes.

Recent trends showcase a shift towards hair follicle tests for drug detection. These are increasingly favored by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Their appeal lies in their zero-tolerance compatibility for drug policies and a greater detection timeframe—up to 90 days. Although they are virtually impossible to cheat, urinalysis remains more precise for drug use detection within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and various substances by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Its collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and it is simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximating the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be acquired. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in processing a drug test result in the laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This process confirms that the sample was securely sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. It’s a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples; however, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any presumptively positive samples in Screening need an additional confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result during Screening, further hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleaned as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, compared to urine tests with a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is very difficult, enhancing the precision of results.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It offers a timeline of drug usage, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Hayward, MO
When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests, the former offers superior detection capabilities that extend beyond recent drug use. With a much longer detection window, hair tests provide unmatched accuracy in Hayward, MO.

Urine tests are limited to detecting recent drug use only, whereas hair follicle testing can uncover drug habits over several months. This extended period provides a more comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance use history, making it a preferred method for employers.

The reliability of hair testing diminishes the chances of deceit, ensuring that employers in Hayward can enforce stringent drug-free workplace policies effectively.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
