Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Hopkins, Missouri. If you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, we are specialists in hair testing and have centers in cities across the nation that can conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Hair testing can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common procedure for detecting drug use. This method is now preferred by many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over typical urine tests. Employers, especially those with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary programs trust hair tests due to their extended detection period—up to 90 days—and near impossibility to tamper with. For screening drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture biomarkers in the fibers of the growing strand, offering a long-term history of substance use. When samples are obtained near the scalp, they can yield a detection window of approximately 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hairs (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, will yield 100mg, considered optimal for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We recommend the specimen be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. "Body hair" refers to all other hair categories, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the first stage of processing a sample within the lab's system. This entails verifying the sample's sealing and shipping integrity, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening provides an initial swift assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is economical for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally valid. All samples presumed positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. Drugs are extracted at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as required. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are highly resistant to tampering, thus providing accurate results.
  • Historical context: It offers insight into a pattern of drug use over time, rather than merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It typically takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Attributes such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the testing process actually examines the hair strand without including the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Hopkins, MO, hair follicle testing outshines urine testing due to its superior detection abilities. With higher accuracy and reliability, it provides a more comprehensive view of drug use history.

Unlike traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing is less prone to tampering, offering an added layer of assurance for accurate results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
