Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing for drugs in Hornersville, Missouri. For those needing a hair or alcohol drug test, we specialize in hair testing with facilities nationwide ready to conduct the test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. These tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Over recent years, hair follicle testing has become a more prevalent method for conducting drug tests. Employers, legal institutions, and substance abuse professionals often prefer hair tests over urine tests. These tests align with zero-tolerance policies, court needs, and probation terms. Hair follicle tests provide a broader detection window—up to 90 days—collected in a supervised setting, making tampering rare. Urine tests retain accuracy for detecting recent drug use, within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within its fibers as the hair strand grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use for up to about a 3-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easily shipped.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is preferred. We advise measuring the sample weight using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. Head hair denotes scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses other types like facial and axillary.

Process Overview

There are four principal steps in laboratory drug test processing: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning begins the sample’s journey through a lab’s system, confirming proper sealing and transport, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening cost-effectively eliminates drug use in most samples, any positive findings require confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening require further confirmation.

Should Screening suggest a positive outcome, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This phase retrieves drugs from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral swabs), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging techniques.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. All processes from Accessioning to Confirmation are scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which feature a shorter detection span.
  • Challenge to deceive: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: Capable of revealing drug use patterns over a timeframe, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Detection in hair takes around 5-7 days post-exposure.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
