In Irena, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions. For those needing hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise lies in hair testing, supported by a network of testing centers across all cities Nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can typically be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing requirements.

Increasingly, hair follicle drug tests have been incorporated into drug testing practices. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts often mandate this test over traditional urine tests. This method supports zero-tolerance drug policies, is favored by courts, and is required for probation compliance. Its key advantage is an extended detection window of up to 90 days, coupled with an observed collection process that makes it highly resistant to tampering. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month history of drug and alcohol use. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A section of hair measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is lacking, an equivalent body hair sample may be gathered. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in a lab encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s database. This step involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not already covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it's an economical approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screening result must be verified to be legally defensible. Any samples preliminarily positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

If a specimen is preliminarily positive during Screening, extra hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), presenting a challenge in hair drug analysis.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty in deception: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, rendering the results more reliable.
  • Historic data provision: It displays a trend of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs generally appear in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly than other methodologies.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
