Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Kewanee, Missouri. Whether a hair or alcohol test is needed, our centers across various cities in the nation specialize in hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown is required, though body hair may suffice. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom test options.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained traction in recent years over traditional methods. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly mandate hair tests over urine tests. This testing technique is favored by zero-tolerance employers and courts, as well as probationary individuals. A key advantage of hair tests is their extended detection period, up to 90 days, through a directly observed process that is difficult to manipulate. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most reliable for detecting very recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair holds a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by retaining biomarkers within the fibers of the emerging hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drug use. It is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample of hair measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 strands (approximately matching the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. The term head hair refers only to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in laboratory processing of drug test outcomes are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, associating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is cost-efficient for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive screen warrants confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug testing as the most complex methodology to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screen is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to cheat: Hair drug tests are very difficult to compromise, ensuring more precise results.
  • Delivers historical data: It can indicate a trend of drug use over a prolonged duration, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence the concentration of drug components in hair.

Note: Often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
