In Laddonia, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing offers specialized hair follicle drug and alcohol testing. Our network includes locations throughout the nation capable of conducting comprehensive hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Recently, the reliance on hair follicle drug tests over traditional urine testing has grown. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests due to their longer detection period—about 90 days—and it's hard to manipulate due to the observed sample collection. Despite this, urine tests are recommended for recent drug use detected within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly viewed as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug use. Hair captures a long-term record of substance consumption by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer almost a three-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. The collection process is straightforward, with minimal risk of tampering and easy transport.

A sample from the scalp measuring 1.5 inches in length, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil), yields around 100mg of hair—the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in processing a laboratory drug test: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a specimen into a lab’s system. This step encompasses ensuring the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing additional data input absent from electronic chain of custody systems.

Screening is a preliminary, swift examination for drugs of abuse. Though cost-effective for excluding substance use in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be legally permissible. Samples yielding presumptive positives in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

Samples identified as presumptive positives in Screening undergo Extraction by removing more hair from the original specimen. This phase extracts drugs from hair at considerably lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Positive screening confirmations are achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptive positive are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter timeframe of urine tests.
  • Resistant to tampering: Tampering with a hair test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: Hair testing can reveal substances use patterns over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to be costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While known as "hair follicle tests," the procedure examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
