Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Lathrop, Missouri. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing with facilities in every city nationwide capable of carrying out such tests. Generally, hair from the scalp or body needs to be between 1.5 to 2 inches long. This method can test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized tests.

Recently, utilizing a hair follicle drug test has become a more common approach in drug testing protocols. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer this over the standard urine test. Companies with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probationary programs often opt for hair testing. The main advantage is its capability to detect drug use over a longer timeframe—up to 90 days—and it's resistant to tampering. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for the identification of drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand, offering a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use. By collecting hair near the scalp, it can furnish up to a 3-month detection timeframe for these substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to manipulate, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 strands of hair (akin to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is recommended to have 150mg of the specimen. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is advised. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be acquired. References to head hair pertain to scalp hair only, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a specimen into the lab’s system, involving the verification of proper sealing and shipment, the assignment of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and the completion of additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary check for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to rule out drug consumption for the majority of samples, a positive screen must be validated to be actionable in court. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

Upon a sample's presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen and set for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are separated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Positively screened results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive findings undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • High integrity: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides usage pattern: It offers insight into drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be detected in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strands and not the follicles beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
