Located in Latour, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings. If a hair test for drugs or alcohol is necessary, the company is a leader in the field with centers in all cities across the country that provide this service. Typically, hair from the crown or body is needed with a length of 1.5 to 2 inches. Testing options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with tailored hair test solutions.

The inclination towards hair follicle drug testing has gained momentum recently. Compared to traditional urine tests, many employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts now favor hair tests. Companies enforcing zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and those on probation see immense value in this test due to its extended detection window of up to 90 days and being almost impossible to tamper with, though urine tests still lead in detecting usage within the prior five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. Collected close to the scalp, hair can deliver a detection window of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages involved in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This includes verifying the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick analysis for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be admissible in legal proceedings. Any samples marked presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample is marked presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty in cheating: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably difficult, thus making results more reliable.
  • Provides historical data: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, and not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Even though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
