Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Laurie, Missouri. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in these tests and maintain testing sites across all major cities nationwide. Generally, hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches from your scalp, or occasionally body hair, suits the testing needs. The analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific testing purposes.

Recently, the adoption of hair follicle drug testing methods has surged. This shift sees employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse experts favoring them over standard urine tests. Hair follicle testing supports zero-tolerance drug policies, serving essential roles for courts and probation checks. Its chief advantage is recognizing drug use over extended durations of up to 90 days and offers a monitorable collection process that is nearly foolproof. However, for identifying very recent drug use, within the last 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means to detect drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture long-term evidence of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the growth of the hair strand. When taken from close to the scalp, hair can offer a discernment window of up to around three months for alcohol and other substances. It's straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately comparable to a #2 pencil), taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair—ideal for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, extras, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen is advisable. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair implies any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process confirms the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a randomly chosen LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is economical and effective in ruling out drug use in most samples, any positive result requires confirmation for court acceptance. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted at a significantly lower concentration than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Any positive screening outcome is verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes a review in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: A hair drug assessment is very challenging to manipulate, ensuring more precise results.
  • Chronological data: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Not ideal for recent use: It requires about 5-7 days before drugs become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite the frequent term "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
