In Lemay, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether a hair or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair assessments. With testing centers in every city nationwide, a hair test can be conducted. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are required for analysis. Options include drug, alcohol/ETG, and other customized hair testing analyses.

The inclusion of hair follicle drug testing has expanded in recent years. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals have opted for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employing this method supports zero-tolerance policies in workplaces, court mandates, and probation requirements. The key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended drug use detection period, usually up to 90 days, in an observed collection process that is nearly foolproof. Nonetheless, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting drug use within the previous 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strands. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair samples are easy to obtain, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg, the optimal quantity for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn't available, an equivalent portion of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (face, underarms, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the laboratory’s system, which includes ensuring the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not provided electronically.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening cost-efficiently rules out drug use for most samples, positive results must be verified to be valid in court. Any samples with presumptive positive results from Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening a complex method.

Verification of positive results from screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary before confirmation. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assays can indicate drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is very challenging to alter a hair drug test, resulting in more accurate findings.
  • Offers usage patterns: It can reveal a timeline of drug use, rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
