Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions in Lexington, Missouri. Whether in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is renowned nationwide, with facilities in every major city ready to perform the required analysis. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body areas can be analyzed effectively. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method in drug screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine samples. This test method is favored by organizations enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, probationers, and legal entities. Its primary advantage is the extended detection period, up to 90 days, collected under direct supervision, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, for detecting more recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis serves as an influential method for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. By embedding biomarkers into the expanding fibers of hair strands, hair retains a comprehensive historical record of substance use. When samples are taken near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use within an estimated detection period of three months. Hair samples are straightforward to gather, difficult to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch cluster of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent in size to a #2 pencil) positioned nearest to the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For tests involving EtG, additional panels, or more than 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale is suggested. In the absence of scalp hair, an equal portion of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we mean solely scalp hair, while body hair pertains to all other hair categories (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a laboratory drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a test sample into a lab’s database. This process ensures that the sample was securely sealed and transported, a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is assigned, and any remaining data entry not available through electronic tracking is completed.

Screening provides an initial brief examination for controlled substances. Although Screening is an economical method for excluding drug presence in most cases, positive screenings must undergo confirmation to be legally viable. Any samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate secondary validation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the initial collection and readied for Extraction. At this point, drugs are isolated from hair at substantially diminished concentrations compared to other techniques (like urine or oral fluids), illustrating why hair drug testing is among the more challenging methods.

Positive Screening outcomes are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positives are cleansed as necessary. The complete process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and meets ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Sustained detection period: Hair drug assessments identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection durations.
  • Challenge to deceive: Resisting manipulation makes hair drug tests highly reliable.
  • Reveals past consumption trends: It outlines a pattern of drug use spanning time, beyond mere contemporary use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Detection in hair requires roughly 5-7 days following drug exposure.
  • Expenses: Hair drug evaluations are more costly than other procedures.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair pigmentation and individual growth shifts influence metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Commonly cited as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets hair strands rather than follicles beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
