Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing available in Longrun, Missouri. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you require, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair analysis with facilities spread across all cities Nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. You generally need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or an acceptable body hair in most situations. Hair analyses can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized.

In recent times, the process for drug screenings has more often incorporated hair follicle analysis. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine methods. Hair follicle tests are employed by employers with stringent no-drug policies, court systems, and probation officials. The standout feature of a hair follicle test is its longer detection window for substance use, typically up to 90 days, with samples collected under observation, making it extremely difficult to deceive. Yet, the urine test remains the top choice for detecting usage within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a detailed long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair strand. When clipped near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch snippet comprising approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for screening and analysis. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests involving more than 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unobtainable, a similar volume of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" exclusively refers to scalp hair, while "Body hair" pertains to all other hairs (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is entered into a laboratory’s system, which entails confirming the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and doing any necessary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drugs. While Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive require further confirmation.

If a sample appears positive in the Screening phase, additional hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. This stage extracts drugs from hair at a notably lower concentration than other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation where necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is virtually impossible, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can track a pattern of drug use over a period, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to be apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
