Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Louisburg, Missouri. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with centers across all cities Nationwide to conduct such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other bespoke testing choices.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become an increasingly common method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer a hair test over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance for drug use, judiciary systems, and individuals on probation. The primary benefit is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it difficult to manipulate. However, for recent drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine testing remains most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains traces of alcohol and drugs, capturing biomarkers within the strand's fibers. When hair closest to the scalp is collected, it offers a detection period of up to about 90 days for alcohol and drugs. The collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5-inch with roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For testing EtG, including add-ons or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a sample into the lab's system. This step includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data not already provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective means to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is preliminarily positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is among the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples with presumptive positive results are washed as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Cheating difficulty: It is extremely challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, thereby increasing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical usage data: It can outline a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs typically take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests," these tests actually assess the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
