In Louisiana, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing offers an extensive range of hair follicle drug testing. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise in hair testing is unrivaled. We have nationwide testing facilities that can administer these tests, requiring typically 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair analysis options.

Over the past years, hair follicle drug tests have become a staple in drug testing procedures. An increasing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Such tests are favored by workplaces with strict anti-drug policies, court systems, and for those on probation. The principal advantage of hair testing is its extended drug detection capability of up to 90 days, conducted under observation, minimizing the possibility of tampering. However, within a five-day window, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair offers a historical record of alcohol and drug use over an extended period. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug usage for up to roughly a 3-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil), nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, additional add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. It's advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory processing of drug tests: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary setup of a sample within a laboratory's system. This phase includes ensuring that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening entails an expedited check for substances of abuse. Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug usage in the majority of cases, yet a positive screening result needs verification to be valid in legal settings. Samples that show presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are drawn from hair in much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is one of the most intricate methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The full lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, complies with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing extends up to 90 days for drug identification, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • High integrity: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Pattern identification: It offers insights into drug use trends over time, beyond current usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks detection of recent usage: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests" frequently being used, the analysis is conducted on the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.
