Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Luray, Missouri. When a hair-based drug or alcohol test is needed, we specialize in this method with facilities situated in cities across the nation. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required for testing. Hair can be examined for substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for conducting substance assessments. This test is preferred by many employers, legal systems, and professionals in substance abuse treatment over traditional urine analysis. It is particularly popular among employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation services, primarily due to its extended detection time of up to 90 days and the observed collection process, making it almost immune to tampering. However, for drug use detection within the last five days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting both drug and alcohol usage. Through the capture of biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair shaft, hair offers a comprehensive history of exposure to alcohol and other substances. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection time frame of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, it is relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A collected sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample for performing both screening and confirmation tests. For tests involving EtG, additional panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to obtain 150mg of the sample. For accuracy, the sample should be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be obtained. When referencing head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the processing of a laboratory drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning phase involves the initial process of integrating a sample into the laboratory's workflow. This step confirms whether the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigns a randomized Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any additional data that is not supplied via an electronic chain of custody system.

During the Screening phase, an expedited assessment for substance abuse detection is conducted. Although Screening is economical for discounting drug use across most samples, any positive results need verification to be legally acceptable. Samples that test positive in Screening undergo further confirmation.

If a sample tests positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair in substantially lower quantities than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva testing), thus making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

The Confirmation process for any positive Screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. As necessary, any presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation. The entirety of the laboratory procedures from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests that have shorter detection spans.
  • Challenging to alter results: It is particularly hard to manipulate results in a hair drug test, thus enhancing accuracy.
  • Supplies historical patterns: Hair testing can reveal a timeline of drug use instead of merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to reveal immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other types of drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may impact the levels of drug metabolites present in the hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", these assessments actually examine the hair shaft rather than the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
