Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lynchburg, Missouri. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in this field and operates testing centers across all cities throughout the nation. Generally, hair from the crown or body measuring 1.5 to 2 inches can be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly shifted towards hair follicle drug testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests instead of the conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The main advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its longer detection duration, typically up to 90 days, which is collected under supervised procedures, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests still hold the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of drug and alcohol intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibrous structure of a growing hair strand. Captured proximate to the head, hair can offer nearly a 90-day timeframe for detecting drugs and alcohol. It is straightforward to collect, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample length of 1.5 inches, roughly comprising 200 hair strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, considered an optimal sample for both screening and confirmation steps. For EtG, additional screenings, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we strictly mean scalp hair. Body hair denotes other hair varieties (such as facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails integrating the sample into the lab’s system, ensuring it was properly sealed and sent, assigning it an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening comprises an initial swift examination for drugs of abuse. Though it provides a cost-efficient strategy to negate drug use in most samples, positive screens need further confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptively positive samples during Screening necessitate an additional confirmation step.

If a sample shows a preliminary positive during Screening, additional hair from the initial sample is processed for Extraction. This process extracts drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug analysis an intricate process.

Confirmation for any positive result from Screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair directive and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests might unveil drug usage for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing the trustworthiness of the results.
  • Chronological insights: It reveals a timeline of drug usage over a prolonged period, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Recent consumption is undetectable: It typically takes about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest within the hair.
  • Cost factor: Hair drug testing generally demands a higher budget compared to other testing alternatives.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth might influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair strands.

Note: Frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", this testing method evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
