Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Matthews, Missouri. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with testing locations available nationwide. For a hair test, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown of your head or body may suffice. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized to meet other testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method in drug testing. Numerous employers, legal courts, and substance abuse experts now favor hair drug tests over standard urine ones. Employers with strict drug-free policies, legal courts, and probationary programs often opt for hair follicle tests due to their extended detection window, often up to 90 days, and the difficulty of tampering. However, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as they grow. When clipped near the scalp, hair can offer a detection range for alcohol and drugs lasting up to roughly 3 months. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be missing, an equivalent volume of body hair can be collected. References to head hair mean only scalp hair, while body hair denotes any other hair type (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four principal phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This process entails verifying the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not encompassed by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary quick assessment for substances of abuse. Though Screening provides a cost-effective method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be court-admissible. Presumptive positives in Screening indeed require subsequent confirmation.

Upon identifying a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair in significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The whole laboratory workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Difficult to evade: It's quite challenging to falsify a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides usage patterns: Offers insight into a history of drug use over time, not just recent occurrences.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and individual growth variance can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
