In Millersville, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair analysis, available across the nation including local centers in every city. Typically, hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches from your head is required, though body hair may also be used. We offer tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Numerous employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair tests over urine tests. This method is utilized by organizations with strict drug policies, courts, and those monitoring probationers. A major advantage is its extended detection window, tracking drug use for up to 90 days; it’s conducted under supervision, which prevents tampering, unlike urine tests that better detect recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It captures biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, providing an extended history of substance use. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to three months for both alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A hair sample that is 1.5 inches long and contains approximately 200 strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will typically weigh 100mg, which is ideal for screening and confirmation purposes. For tests such as EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen sample of 150mg is preferable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair alone. Body hair, on the other hand, encompasses all other hair types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into a lab's workflow. This process includes confirming proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and undertaking any extra data entries that an electronic chain of custody system might not cover.

Screening performs an initial, rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. It is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples. However, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any sample that is preliminarily positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples that are preliminarily positive are washed as necessary before confirmation. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards for accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests have the capability to detect drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are hard to manipulate, thus yielding more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: This method offers an indication of drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", this testing technique evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing stands out compared to traditional urine tests in Millersville, MO. Its ability to uncover drug use over an extended period surpasses the limited time frame of urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
