In Mindenmines, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If a hair or alcohol test is what you need, our nationwide network of centers specializes in hair testing. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary, whether from the crown or body, for effective assessment. This testing can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate other specified options.

The prevalence of hair follicle drug testing has surged as a method for identifying substance use. More employers, legal entities, and rehabilitation experts demand this test over traditional urine analysis. Specifically, businesses with strict drug-free mandates, courts, and parole programs favor this method. Its key advantage lies in an extended detection window—up to 90 days—apart from the near-impossibility of manipulation, outperforming urine tests, especially for recent consumption detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained near the roots, hair can offer nearly a 3-month window of detection for substances such as alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, provides some resistance to tampering, and is simple to transport.

Gathering 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is considered the optimal amount for analysis and verification. For tests involving EtG, additional panels, or exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If head hair is unavailable, the same quantity of body hair can be used. Here, head hair strictly refers to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome consists of four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory’s records. This step involves ensuring that the sample remains sealed and is shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient strategy to exclude drug usage across most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal validity. Any samples testing presumptively positive during Screening demand a secondary confirmation process.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen to prepare for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lesser concentrations than in other testing methods (such as urine or saliva), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for as long as 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a briefer detection span.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Provides a usage history: This testing method can showcase a pattern of drug intake over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: A period of approximately 5-7 days is necessary for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternate drug testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Variations, such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth, can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed “hair follicle tests,” the analysis inspects the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
