Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Miner, Missouri. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing boasts expertise in hair analysis with facilities in every city nationwide that can conduct hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body are required. Hair samples can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing methods.

Over recent years, drug screening has increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. Employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse professionals often prefer hair tests to traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and individuals on probation. Its key advantage is a far longer detection window for substances, reaching up to 90 days, gathered through supervised collection, and is nearly impossible to falsify. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most definitive.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a long-term history of substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sourced near the scalp, it can offer up to a 3-month detection timeline for alcohol and other substances. The collection process is straightforward, the manipulation is challenging, and it is convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional requests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The essential steps in the laboratory procedure for a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the primary processing of a sample into the lab's system. It involves confirming the sample was sealed and dispatched properly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick assessment for substances of abuse. While economical to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing highly complex.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug screenings can detect substance use up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenge to falsify: It is extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug screening, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Yields historical data: It provides an overview of substance usage over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair within approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
