Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Mineral Point, Missouri. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing spans across numerous cities nationwide. Typically, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. These tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

Over the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent. Employers, legal systems, and substance experts often prefer it over traditional urine tests. This method caters to zero-tolerance employers, judiciary requirements, and probation monitoring. The key advantage is its extended detection window, up to a 90-day period, and its resistance to tampering. Nonetheless, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term evidence of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can present up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 strands of hair (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or testing over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When referring to head hair, it refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps involved in processing a lab drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This encompasses verifying that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary quick evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient way to exclude drug presence in the majority of samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be allowable in court. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this procedure, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), resulting in hair drug screening being the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely hard to deceive a hair drug test, thus ensuring the results are more reliable.
  • Supplies historical insights: It can offer a trend of drug consumption over a period, not just recent utilization.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Costly: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug screening methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Even though often called "hair follicle tests", the examination itself analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing far surpasses urine testing in terms of accuracy and reliability in Mineral Point, MO. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis captures a wider span of substance use history, offering a detailed report that urine simply can't match. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
