Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Montier, Missouri. Whether you need to undergo a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched. Our facilities across all cities Nationwide are equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common for drug screening. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are essential for organizations with no-tolerance policies on drug use, legal judgments, and probation monitoring. A significant advantage is the testing's extended detection window, up to 90 days, with an observed collection process, making it highly tamper-proof. However, for recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of both alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer roughly up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analyzing and verifying. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be substituted. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key steps in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into the lab’s framework. This comprises ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data input not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for abused drugs. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive result must be verified for it to be admissible in legal settings. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need a secondary verification.

If a specimen tests presumptively positive during Screening, extra hair is obtained from the original sample and processed for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (like urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most complex procedure to conduct.

Verification of any positive Screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the standards of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection time frame.
  • Challenging to falsify: It’s extremely hard to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the reliability of the findings.
  • Yields historical data: It provides a record of drug use over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variation in results: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may impact the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
