Offering comprehensive hair follicle testing, Accredited Drug Testing stands ready to meet your requirements in Montreal, Missouri. Our proficiency in hair drug and alcohol tests is matched by our extensive network of testing centers nationwide. Typically, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed, whether from the scalp or body, to conduct precise drug, alcohol/ETG, or custom hair analyses.

Recently, hair follicle tests have gained traction as a standard method in drug testing. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation services greatly benefit from hair tests due to their 90-day detection window. Though unbeatable for long-term usage insights, urine tests still best capture recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has evolved into a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as an extensive archive of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a nearly three-month period of detectability for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy for transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and validation. For EtG assessments, additional tests, or screenings surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be utilized. The term head hair specifically denotes scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Summary

The key stages in laboratory analysis for a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory's infrastructure. This process includes confirming proper seal and shipment of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes an initial rapid assessment for drug substances. While a cost-effective strategy to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity during Screening, extra hair from the initial sample is extracted and set for further Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair in notably lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is a challenging process.

Confirmation of any positive screening is administered using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug assessments can track drug usage up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a limited detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug assessment is challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides trends of drug use over time, not just current consumption.

Challenges:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
