In Montrose, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services. For those needing a hair or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist with centers nationwide. These tests require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Hair testing analyzes substances, including drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offers custom testing options.

The trend in conducting drug tests now increasingly involves hair follicle sampling. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are shifting to hair tests over urine. These tests are ideal for zero-tolerance workplaces, probation cases, and court orders due to their extensive detection window of up to 90 days and low susceptibility to tampering, ensuring a high level of accuracy except for the last 5 days where urine tests prevail.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent means of detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive history by trapping biomarkers within the strands during hair growth. Hair sampled near the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol use over a span of up to three months. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp, yields 100mg, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is lacking, a similar amount of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where the sample is processed into the lab system. This step involves confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary evaluation for presence of drugs. Although cost-effective, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally viable. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

For samples testing presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drug substances are extracted at much lower concentrations than with other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of performing hair drug tests.

Confirmation of positive screening results is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. Positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The laboratory processes from Accessioning to Confirmation are governed by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter duration of urine tests.
  • Resistance to adulteration: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Historical insight: Offers a record of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: There is typically a 5-7 day delay before drugs are traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually targets the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
