Located in Morley, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings. Our expertise in hair and alcohol testing spans nationwide, with centers in every major city equipped to conduct these tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary for testing, which can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, as well as other tailored testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity in recent years for its reliability. More employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Organizations with no-tolerance policies against drug use, judicial systems, and parole officials commonly use hair testing due to its extended detection window of up to 90 days. However, for drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have gained recognition as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug use. Hair offers an extended record of substance usage by preserving biomarkers in the strands during growth. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece consisting of around 200 strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields about 100mg of hair, the preferred sample for initial screening and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, it's advised to have 150mg. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair can't be sourced, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing for a drug test outcome comprises four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample within a lab's system. This involves confirming the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substances. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to dismiss drug presence in most samples, any positive result requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any screenings deemed presumptively positive necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample register as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is sourced from the original collection and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at much reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), thus making hair testing the most challenging methodology to perform.

Confirmation for any positive test result is performed with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptively positive items are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely tough, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Shows usage history: It can illustrate drug use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • No recent use detection: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the evaluation actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
