Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Morrison, Missouri. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we provide specialized hair assessment services through our nationwide testing centers. Typically, about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the head or body, is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific purposes.

In recent times, the preference for drug evaluations has often leaned toward hair follicle assessments. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug assessments instead of the traditional urine method. Organizations with strict drug policies, as well as courts and probationary services, utilize these assessments. The distinct advantage of hair tests is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, under supervised collection, making it highly tamper-resistant. Yet, for identifying drug usage within the past five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to gather, relatively tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch snippet of approximately 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal specimen for evaluation and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement is suggested. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be obtained. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory test processing involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This step ensures that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplemental data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. Although it is a cost-effective method to exclude drug use for the bulk of samples, a positive result in Screening must be confirmed for court due to admissibility requirements. Samples presenting a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive in Screening, extra hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation for any positive Screening outcome is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair protocols and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can indicate drug consumption for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Manipulating a hair drug test is notably challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It can outline a pattern of drug consumption over a timeline, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally incur higher expenses than alternative testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variances can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair shaft rather than the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Morrison, MO, hair follicle tests surpass urine tests by offering superior detection capabilities. These tests provide enhanced accuracy in identifying past substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
