Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Musicks Ferry, Missouri. Specializing in hair assessments, our numerous testing centers span across all cities nationwide to meet your hair drug or alcohol testing needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is required for testing, capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized substances with precision.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a favored method. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are leaning towards hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair testing aligns with zero-tolerance policies, providing a 90-day detection window and is highly resistant to tampering. Nevertheless, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the gold standard for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective resource for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a repository for long-term information on drugs and alcohol, capturing biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches from approximately 200 hair strands (around the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg of hair is made. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen's weight. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar volume of body hair can be used. The reference to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the initial phase of sample processing within a laboratory's framework. This step includes checking the sample's seal and shipment integrity, appointing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While it provides an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen demands confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that register as presumptively positive during Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

When a Screening stage yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction preparation. Here, drugs are drawn from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening arises through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples preliminarily labeled as positive undergo washing pre-confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory sequence, from Accessioning through Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug tests are extremely resistant to tampering, increasing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a drug usage pattern over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: There is an approximate 5-7 day delay before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variances such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis pertains to the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
