Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Napoleon, Missouri. Our expertise in hair testing ensures that if you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we have numerous testing sites nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for testing. Hair samples can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

In recent times, the approach to drug testing increasingly incorporates hair follicle drug tests. Various employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor hair tests over the usual urine method. Employers with stringent no-drug policies, as well as courts and probationary individuals, commonly use hair follicle tests. The standout advantage of hair testing is its prolonged detection period, which can reveal drug use up to 90 days back. The process is observed and is almost impossible to manipulate. Yet, for drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers in the strands of hair as they grow. If collected near the scalp, hair may reveal a detection period of up to about three months for substances like alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is perfect for conducting both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is preferable. We advise weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a corresponding amount of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test processing in a lab encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially entering a sample into the lab's system. This encompasses checking that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry not already covered by an electronic chain of custody method.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While it’s a cost-effective strategy to negate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be accepted legally. All samples that are provisionally positive during Screening will require further confirmation.

If a sample tests provisionally positive through Screening, further hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During this step, drugs are meticulously extracted from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), emphasizing why hair drug screening presents a greater challenge to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screen outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to the confirmation step when necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is validated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine examinations with shorter windows.
  • High credibility: Attempting to deceive a hair drug test is incredibly challenging, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Tracks historical use: It charts a user’s drug activity over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection for recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests incur higher costs than other testing strategies.
  • Result variability: Diverse factors such as hair pigmentation and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: Despite being sometimes termed "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
