Accredited Drug Testing offers holistic hair follicle drug screening services right in Blue Springs, Missouri. If you need to conduct a test for drugs or alcohol via hair samples, we specialize in this technique, boasting facilities in numerous cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body is required. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer personalized testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular for substance detection. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair tests over traditional urine samples. Hair screenings are favored by those with zero-tolerance drug policies, court mandates, and probation conditions. The key advantage is its extended drug detection window of up to 90 days with direct observation, making cheating nearly impossible. However, urine tests are preferable for recent usage within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal roughly a three-month perspective on alcohol and drug consumption. Hair is easy to obtain, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil in width) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, serving as the optimal sample for preliminary and confirmatory checks. For EtG, supplementary, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair isn’t obtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean hair from the scalp. Body hair includes all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in laboratory processing for drug test outcomes are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes checking that the sample was properly sealed and transported, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary check for drugs. While Screening is a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result in Screening requires further validation to be legally acceptable. Samples showing possible positives in Screening indeed necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this step, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screen is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples undergo a washing process prior to confirmation as needed. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug analyses can reveal drug use over up to 90 days, relative to urine tests that have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficult to circumvent: It is extremely challenging to circumvent a hair drug analysis, rendering the findings more reliable.
  • Provides usage history: It can show a pattern of drug consumption across time, not merely recent usage.

Constraints:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: It generally takes 5-7 days for substances to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are typically costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variances can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Caution: Although commonly referenced as "hair follicle tests," the analysis examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why opt for hair follicle testing over urine testing in Blue Springs, MO? Simple—it's about enhanced detection accuracy. Hair tests excel in identifying drug use over time, outperforming conventional urine tests. A critical advantage of hair testing is its reliability in providing a thorough and comprehensive profile, highlighting its superiority in long-term detection.

The intricacies of hair analysis offer a broader window of drug history, contrary to urine tests which focus on recent use. This makes hair tests indispensable for employers who need a detailed substance use history, supporting decisions based on precise and credible data.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Blue Springs, MO, boasts an impressive extended detection window, crucial for employers. These tests offer insight into substance use up to 90 days prior, providing a complete narrative of an individual's drug history. This extended timeline is pivotal in delivering a comprehensive analysis of long-term patterns.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
