In New Florence, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing offers a comprehensive solution for hair follicle drug testing. We excel in hair testing for both drugs and alcohol, providing services nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required, whether from the scalp or body. Our hair tests adapt to various needs, allowing for substance, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized analyses.

Hair follicle testing has become increasingly prevalent in drug screening protocols. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. They cater to organizations with strict drug-free policies and individuals on probation. Hair testing provides a 90-day detection window, ensuring accuracy and minimizing tampering. For assessing recent substance intake within 5 days, urine tests remain optimal.

What it is, How it works

Seen as a potent technique, hair testing aids in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By ensnaring biomarkers within the strands, hair offers a prolonged history of substance use. When obtained from near the scalp, hair can deliver nearly a three-month detection window for drugs and alcohol. Hair is easy to gather, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG enhancements or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is inaccessible, equivalent body hair might be taken. Head hair pertains to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in laboratory drug testing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a lab’s system. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry the electronic chain of custody might not provide.

Screening offers a swift preliminary test for substances of abuse. Although cost-effective for initially excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result requires verification for court acceptance. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted for the Extraction stage, where drugs are obtained from hair at far lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably challenging.

Confirmation of positive results is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation, as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair tests can reveal drug usage up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Challenging to adulterate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, enhancing accuracy of outcomes.
  • Historical insight: Such tests offer a long-term usage pattern, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become evident in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests are pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Hair color and individual growth differences can influence metabolite concentrations.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests," the test analyzes the hair strand, not the scalp hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
