Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Oakland Park, Missouri. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this field, with facilities available across the nation to conduct these evaluations. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is typically needed. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other specialized hair testing requirements.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more popular method for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly opting for these tests over traditional urine analysis. Hair follicle testing is favored by organizations with strict drug-free policies due to its longer detection window of up to 90 days, supervised collection process, and difficulty to adulterate. Nonetheless, for recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is acknowledged as a significant resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows, hair provides an extensive timeline of substance use. When obtained close to the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol consumption for a period extending up to about three months. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG assessments, add-ons, and/or examinations over 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, equivalent quantities of body hair may be harvested. When mentioning head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal phases in processing a drug test result in a laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial handling of a sample as it enters a lab’s system. This process involves ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any necessary data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug consumption for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be recognized in legal contexts. Samples that appear positive in Screening require further verification.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample for Extraction. At this point, drugs are drawn out from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is one of the most challenging methodologies.

Any positive findings from Screening undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation, as needed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, compared to the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are tough to deceive, enhancing result reliability.
  • Delivers historical insights: The tests reveal patterns of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Fails to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
