At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Old Mines, Missouri. If a test for drugs or alcohol via hair analysis is what you need, we specialize in it with locations nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp, or body hair if necessary, is used, which can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other tests.

Recent trends show a shift towards hair follicle drug tests as the preferred method for sampling. Courts, employers, and Substance Abuse professionals often choose this over traditional urine samples. It's favored by organizations enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies due to its extensive 90-day detection window, observance during collection, and higher resistance to tampering. Urine tests, however, still provide more precise results for usage within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Seen as an effective instrument, hair testing is invaluable for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a history of substances over time by encasing biomarkers within the hair shaft. If gathered near the scalp, it can offer an insight into a roughly 3-month period of consumption for alcohol and other substances. Hair collections are straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

For optimal analysis, a 1.5-inch lock comprising roughly 200 hairs (similar in width to a #2 pencil) should be cut nearest the scalp, providing the requisite 100mg for both screening and validation. For EtG assessments, supplementary tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is advisable. Employ a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. Should scalp hair be scarce, an equivalent weight of body hair can substitute. ‘Head hair’ signifies only scalp hair, while ‘body hair’ covers all other kinds (e.g., facial, underarm).

Process Overview

Four essential stages mark the lab procedures for processing drug test outcomes: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts the test process within a lab system, including checking sample seals and shipment protocol, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing supplementary data steps that the electronic chain of custody doesn’t cover.

Screening primarily checks for abused substances. As a cost-saving measure, it eliminates drug usage in most samples, though court-admissible positive results need confirmation. Presumptively positive samples necessitate further validation.

Should Screening suggest a positive, more hair from the original sample is processed for Extraction, where drug compounds are isolated at a concentration lower than other methods like urine or saliva. Hence, hair drug testing is renowned for its complexity.

Confirmation of positive results occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All potentially positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if required. The complete lab workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation aligns with CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair credentials and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair tests reveal drug consumption up to 90 days previous, unlike the shorter-lived urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: The nature of hair testing makes deception challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological insight: It reflects the sequence of drug intake over time, unlike some tests that only show recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • No immediate detection: Drugs take 5-7 days after use to register in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair testing is typically pricier than alternate modalities.
  • Result variability: Metabolite concentrations might fluctuate due to factors such as hair pigmentation and personal hair growth differences.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strands above the scalp, not the follicles beneath.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
