Based in Olivette, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. For those requiring drug or alcohol hair testing, we specialize in these services and our centers are present in cities throughout the nation equipped to conduct hair tests. In most scenarios, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Various drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing can be analyzed via hair samples.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has become increasingly prevalent in recent years for drug testing purposes. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists often now prefer this method over traditional urine tests. Those advocating zero-tolerance on drugs, courts, and probation clients favor hair testing because it covers a more extended detection timeframe, up to 90 days, is collected under supervision, and is notoriously difficult to deceive. However, urine tests remain unmatched in accuracy for drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair, it provides a lengthy history of alcohol and drug intake. Hair gathered near the scalp can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. This method of collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch section containing around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil), nearest to the scalp, results in a 100mg sample, which is ideal for screening and validation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This step involves confirming the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry that isn't featured in an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening step is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although it is a cost-efficient technique for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for use in legal proceedings. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample is positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are separated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive results occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated per the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair program and ISO / IEC 17025 certification standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection timespan.
  • High resistance to manipulation: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably challenging, increasing result accuracy.
  • Tracks usage patterns: The test reveals drug use trends over time, not just recent consumption.

Disadvantages:

  • Incapable of spotting recent drug use: Drugs become detectable in hair in roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Keep in mind, although often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
