Located in Pascola, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. If a hair or alcohol screening is required, our expertise in hair analysis is unmatched with testing hubs in cities around the Nation capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Hair screenings can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized test options.

Lately, hair follicle methods are increasingly common in drug testing. Favored by employers, legal entities, and those handling Substance Abuse cases, hair drug screenings are replacing urine tests. Employers with stringent drug-free rules, courts, and probationers use hair tests. Their key advantage is the extended detection timeframe, up to 90 days, coupled with an observed process, which nearly eliminates cheating. However, urine tests remain preferred within five days of suspected drug use for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. By encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand, hair offers an extended overview of alcohol and other drugs. When collected near the scalp, it can show usage within a roughly three-month period. Hair samples are easy to obtain, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A collection of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) from the scalp, typically yields the required 100mg for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or more extensive testing beyond ten panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It's best to use a jeweler’s scale for accuracy. If scalp hair isn't available, equivalent body hair can be collected. Specifically, head hair pertains to only scalp hair, while body hair encompasses every other type (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test result in a lab involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is initially integrated into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was securely sealed and transported, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any missing data entry unprovided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. While it offers cost-effective means to largely exclude drug usage, any positive preliminary results necessitate confirmation to be judicially valid. All presumptively positive samples from Screening require further confirmation.

Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening have additional hair extracted for the Extraction phase. Here, substances are retrieved at considerably lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing notably challenging.

For Confirmation of any positive screen, methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed. Presumptive positives undergo cleansing before confirmation if needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection timeline.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result precision.
  • Historical use insights: It reveals patterns of drug usage over time rather than only recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Does not detect recent intake: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than other techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and growth differences can impact metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
