Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Paynesville, Missouri. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair analysis, with facilities available in every city nationwide to conduct such evaluations. A hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head's crown or body is typically needed. Hair tests can be customized to screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other options.

Recently, the inclusion of hair follicle drug tests in drug screenings has intensified. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are preferred by organizations enforcing zero-tolerance policies, as well as within judicial processes and probation conditions. The main advantage of hair tests is their extended detection window of up to 90 days and the observed collection process, making them difficult to cheat. However, for drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers in hair capture biomarkers that provide an extended timeline of substance use. Hair taken near the scalp can offer a detection period of roughly 90 days for alcohol and various drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and validation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's best to use a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample weight. If scalp hair can't be obtained, a similar amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" pertains specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes the key stages of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase, consisting of entering a sample into a lab's system. This step verifies that the sample's seal was intact and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and involves completing any missing data not accounted for by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial inspection for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient measure to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive result in a screen requires confirmation for it to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that show a presumptive positive during Screening need further verification.

Should a sample indicate a positive in the Screening, further hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are removed from hair at a lower concentration compared to other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples that indicate presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the standards of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for approximately 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter scope.
  • Difficulty to manipulate: It is challenging to alter a hair drug test, making the outcomes more reliable.
  • Chronicles substance use: Offers a record of drug consumption over time, unlike just indicating recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair pigment and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle rooted under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
