Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Pierce City, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for hair drug and alcohol testing services. Expert in hair analysis, we offer tests at centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is sufficient. Tests may examine drug or alcohol/ETG use or be tailored to other needs.

Hair follicle drug testing is increasingly preferred for substance tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists now opt for hair tests over urine due to strict policies. Hair tests deliver a longer detection window of up to 90 days, complicating test tampering, while urine tests excel in identifying recent 5-day usage.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective means for uncovering the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers as hair grows. When secured near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, alteration is challenging, and shipping is hassle-free.

An ideal hair sample for analysis and verification includes 1.5 inches of about 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yielding 100mg. For EtG, additional add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Utilize a jeweler’s scale for precise specimen measurement. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be obtained. "Head hair" denotes scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Drug testing at a laboratory comprises four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the first step, where a sample is introduced into a lab’s system. This step ensures that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and manages any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial swift evaluation for substance misuse. Though Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug use in most samples, for legal admissibility, a positive result requires secondary confirmation. Any samples presumptively positive during Screening demand further verification.

For presumptive positives, additional hair from the initial sample is prepared for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a far lower concentration than methods such as urine or oral fluids, explaining the complexity of hair drug testing.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods confirm any positive screening results. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the standards set forth by the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to a 90-day period, unlike urine tests that have shorter detection spans.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result credibility.
  • Historical consumption data: It reflects drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result disparities: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
