Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Pilot Grove, Missouri. If hair or alcohol testing is needed, we specialize in hair analysis with testing sites nationwide. Hair of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or from the body is typically required. Hair tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized to test other substances.

Recently, drug testing has increasingly used hair follicle methods. Employers, the judicial system, and Substance Abuse experts request hair tests over urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal authorities, and probationers utilize hair tests. This method offers a much longer detection window of up to 90 days, involves a directly observed collection, and is virtually tamper-proof. For drug use in the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair fibers capture long-term drug and alcohol biomarkers, providing a history of consumption. When extracted near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to roughly three months for these substances. It is straightforward to collect, more challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

To obtain the ideal sample for screening and confirmation, a 1.5-inch length consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair. For EtG add-ons and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accuracy. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. Note that head hair refers solely to scalp hair, while body hair pertains to all other types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing in the laboratory system. This step involves ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any further required data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage in most cases, a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples testing presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for preparation in the Extraction stage. Here, the concentration of drugs removed from hair is lower than in other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

To confirm any positive results from Screening, methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed. As a standard procedure, all samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed pre-confirmation if needed. The entire process from Accessioning through Confirmation is conducted under the scrutiny of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation in conformity with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a reduced timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite arduous, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals extensive usage patterns: It supplies a timeline of drug use, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become apparent in hair in about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth affect the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the procedure analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Pilot Grove, MO, one can see clear advantages. Superior detection and reliability are hallmarks of hair testing, offering a more comprehensive insight into long-term substance use.

Urine tests often look back only a few days, while hair tests can detect usage for up to 90 days. This broadened detection window provides a more accurate view of an individual's drug use history, aiding employers and professionals in making informed decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
