In Plattsburg, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. We specialize in hair and alcohol testing, with centers available nationwide for conducting these tests. Testing typically requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp, but body hair can be used when needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or include other tailored options based on requirements.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a standard practice in recent years. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts tend to prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. Organizations with strict drug-free policies, judiciary systems, and probation programs utilize hair testing due to its extended detection window, which can trace drug use up to 90 days. However, urine tests remain preferable for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now viewed as an effective instrument for spotting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When sourced close to the scalp, hair offers approximately a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. When mentioning head hair, we are discussing scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system. This encompasses verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary swift inspection for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective means to dismiss drug use for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for courtroom admissibility. Samples that are initially positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample be initially positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), explaining why hair drug examination is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples are washed before confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug examinations can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is exceedingly challenging to compromise a hair drug examination, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical data: It delivers a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations typically cost more than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual variances in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the examination itself analyzes the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
