In Portage Des Sioux, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol via hair samples, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched. With our testing centers located not just in Portage Des Sioux but also nationwide, we're equipped to carry out the necessary procedures. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is required. These tests can examine substances such as drugs, ETG/alcohol, or other tailored options.

Of late, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prominent method for substance screening. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance misuse experts are opting for this over the traditional urine test. Especially useful for zero-tolerance workplaces, probationary checks, and legal proceedings, hair tests boast a substantial benefit — a detection window stretching up to 90 days. Observed collections ensure test integrity, and they're notably difficult to circumvent. However, for recent drug use within five days, the urine test still proves more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to approximately three months for alcohol and other substances. The collection process for hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen's weight. Should scalp hair be unobtainable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test outcome entails four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary integration of a sample into the laboratory's system. This comprises verifying the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient approach to dismiss drug usage in most samples, any positive screen must undergo confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Samples that show presumptive positivity during Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair in concentrations much lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are washed before undergoing confirmation, as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated to meet both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certification per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring greater accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical insights: Offers a pattern of drug use over time, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
