Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Portageville, Missouri. For those requiring substance testing, including alcohol, we are specialists with testing sites available throughout the United States. To conduct a hair test, generally 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or from other body parts is required. Our tests include options for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific screening needs.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a prevalent method in drug screening. Increasingly, employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts favor hair drug tests over urine tests. This form of testing is favored by organizations with strict anti-drug use policies, legal entities, and individuals under probation. The major advantage is its extended detection period, generally up to 90 days, with a supervised collection process that makes tampering nearly impossible. However, for identifying recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now widely recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch section comprising about 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect sample weight for screening and confirmation. When conducting EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is preferred. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is advisable. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, court-admissible results require confirmation of any positive screen. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need a secondary confirmation.

For samples testing presumptively positive in the Screening phase, a section of hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to bypass: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical drug use data: It can display a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Differences such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
