In Portland, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, we provide services at centers spanning all cities in the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required, and tests can be customized to include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific needs.

Recently, the adoption of hair follicle tests for drug screening has surged. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer this method over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing strict drug policies, courts, and probationary programs utilize hair tests due to the extended detection window, which can reveal drug usage up to 90 days prior. While it's challenging to alter these results, urine tests remain the preferred method for insights into drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair retains a long-term record of substances by incorporating biomarkers into its growing strands. When taken near the scalp, it provides a 3-month period of detection for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is easy, difficult to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil thickness) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels beyond 10, 150mg of the sample is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is advised. If scalp hair is lacking, a similar amount of body hair is suitable. When mentioned, head hair indicates scalp hair. Other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.) are termed body hair.

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab analysis of drug tests include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes initial processing within a lab’s system. This includes ensuring proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing data not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective way to eliminate drug usage for most samples, any positive result requires confirmation to be court-worthy. Samples indicating presumptive positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair testing particularly challenging.

Confirmation of positive Screening involves techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical insight: It shows a pattern of drug use over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically more costly than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing stands out over traditional urine tests in Portland, MO due to its superior detection capabilities. This method uncovers drug use with greater accuracy and extends the detection period considerably longer than urine tests, giving a clearer picture of an individual's substance use history.

While urine tests remain popular, they are limited to detecting recent use. Hair testing, on the other hand, offers a larger window of detection, identifying substance use up to 90 days prior, providing unmatched reliability and confidence in results.

Extended Detection Window

In Portland, MO, hair follicle testing is invaluable for detecting drug use over an extended period, up to 90 days, as opposed to traditional testing methods limited to days or weeks. This comprehensive view aids employers in understanding long-term substance use patterns.

Employers benefit from the ability of hair tests to evaluate an applicant or employee's substance history over several months, ensuring workforce reliability and support for drug-free workplace policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
