Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle substance screening services in Riverview, Missouri. As a leader in the field, we offer expert hair and alcohol tests at our numerous centers spread across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used for analysis. Hair assays can identify the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific testing criteria.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for drug screenings. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts opt for hair testing over the traditional urine method. This type of test is chosen by organizations with stringent anti-drug policies and is common in judicial settings and probation cases. Its primary advantage is an extended detection window, generally up to 90 days, conducted under strict supervision making tampering extremely difficult. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the gold standard for detecting recent use, particularly within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended historical view of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the hair's growing strands. When obtained near the scalp, hair has the ability to reveal up to a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample of approximately 200 strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair only, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The sequence for laboratory analysis of a drug test result includes four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s protocol. This process ensures the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an expedited initial analysis for drugs of abuse. While Screening efficiently excludes drug presence in most samples, a positive screen must be substantiated to hold up in legal contexts. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity in the Screening stage, further hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is very difficult to cheat a hair drug test, making the results more accurate.
  • Provides historical data: It can provide a pattern of drug use over a period of time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are generally more expensive than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can affect the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test itself analyzes the hair strand and not the hair follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
