Accredited Drug Testing in Roby, Missouri offers thorough hair follicle drug testing. If you need hair or alcohol testing, we specialize in these tests, with centers across the nation ready to conduct your test. Typically, hair from the crown of the head or body can be used. These tests are effective for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often choose hair tests over typical urine testing. Hair follicle tests benefit employers maintaining zero-tolerance policies, providing an up to 90-day detection window. While it's difficult to tamper with, urine tests remain optimal for confirming recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage for up to about three months. Hair collection is effortless, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5-inch length containing roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) most proximate to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or beyond ten-panel tests, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advocate verifying the sample weight using a jeweler’s scale. If no scalp hair is present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four principal steps in the lab processing of a test result, which include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves entering a sample into the laboratory’s system initially. This step consists of checking the integrity of the sample seal and shipment, allocating a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any supplementary data entry that an electronic chain of custody system may not cover.

Screening refers to a preliminary swift assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening serves as a cost-efficient tool to dismiss drug intake in most samples; however, a positive screen demands further confirmation for legal admissibility. All samples flagged as presumptively positive in the Screening stage need secondary confirmation.

If the result is presumptively positive during the Screening, additional hair is sourced from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug analysis the most challenging technique to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives get washed before confirmation as warranted. Every step from Accessioning to Confirmation in the lab is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) guidelines for Hair and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a narrower detection period.
  • Increased difficulty to falsify: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Delivers usage pattern: It can track drug use trends over time, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair about 5-7 days following usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally carries a higher cost relative to alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may alter metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Whilst often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the examination targets the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
