In Rutledge, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require a screening for drugs or alcohol, our nationwide centers are equipped to administer a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific substances.

Recently, hair follicle tests have gained prevalence in drug testing methods. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse counselors now choose this over traditional urine tests. For businesses with strict no-drug policies, or those on probation, hair tests offer a much longer detection window — up to 90 days — which is almost impossible to fake. Urine tests, however, remain the best option for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering a retrospective insight into alcohol and drug usage. When collected proximate to the scalp, hair can reveal substance use over an approximate 90-day period. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient for transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil's thickness), yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for testing and validation. For EtG, additional substances, and tests surpassing 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. Referring to head hair denotes only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test results encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes initial processing within a lab's system. This step involves affirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, inputting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data needed beyond what an electronic chain of custody system provides.

Screening offers a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although cost-efficient for excluding most samples regarding drug use, confirmation is necessary for any positive screen to be court-admissible. Samples preliminarily positive in Screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for preparation in Extraction. This method involves extracting drugs at much lower concentrations from hair compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering it the most complex drug screening method.

Confirmation of a positive screening result employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples showing presumptive positivity undergo washing before confirmation when required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire testing process is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days past, whereas urine tests cover a shorter time frame.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is significantly challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: This method can track drug use patterns over time, unlike recent use tests.

Limitations:

  • Cannot ascertain recent usage: It generally takes 5-7 days before drugs can be detected in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug testing is generally more costly than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can affect drug metabolite levels within the hair.

Note: Commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests", this test actually analyzes the hair strand instead of the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
