In the locale of Scotsdale, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If a hair or alcohol test is required, our expertise lies in hair testing. We provide services at numerous centers across all cities Nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. Our hair tests evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for varied testing needs.

Lately, the prevalence of utilizing hair follicle testing for drug screening has risen significantly. Replacing traditional urine tests, many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests. These tests are employed by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationary contexts. A key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended drug use detection, typically up to 90 days. It involves a monitored collection process and is very difficult to tamper with. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within the past five days, a urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows, hair retains a long-term record of substance use. When sourced from near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol exposure for about 90 days. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and transportation is hassle-free.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands akin to a #2 pencil's diameter, is expected to yield 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is preferable. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for accuracy in weighing. In the absence of scalp hair, equivalent body hair can be utilized. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handles any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. While cost-effective for eliminating drug usage in most samples, a Screen positive must be validated for it to be court-admissible. Presumptive positives in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. Here, drug extractions occur at lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, adding complexity to hair drug screening.

Positive Screening confirmations are executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Necessary pre-confirmation washing is conducted on all presumptive positives. The process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny by the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to the accreditation of ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection span: Hair tests uncover drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a limited detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: It outlines drug use patterns over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot trace recent intake: Roughly 5-7 days are required before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite levels in hair can fluctuate due to factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
